초록 : Off the east coast of the Republic of South Korea, the Bundesanstalt fur Bodenforschung together with the Geological Survey of Korea carried out a marine seismic survey with the following objectives: 1) A study of the seaward extension of the Paleozoic Pyongan System which contains coal onshore by Mukho. 2) Reconnaissance of the northern offshore extension of the Tertiary sedimentary basin north of Pohang in order to determine the potential for hydrocarbon reservoirs. Totally 2592 line-kilometers were surveyed. From the seismic study it appears that sediments correlative with the onshore coal-bearing Permo-Carboniferous strata near Mukho are not present outside of the two mile limit. Offshore from Mukho, the Mesozoic and Paleozoic sediments could not be recognized seismically and the Cenozoic sediments are thin and lack structures. Consequently there is little likely-hood of economically significant hydrocarbons in this area. Within the 850 m thick late Cenozoic sediments in the offshore area north of Pohang, no geologically interesting structures were recognized. Structures are present in the underlying older sediments, however, they lso are not favourable for the occurrence of economically significant hydrocarbon deposits because of the probable thinness of the section. It is recommended that the Geological Survey of Korea make additional refraction surveys of the narrow shelf area between 36˚N and 36˚30'N, to close the gap between the shoreline and the profiles surveyed by the BfB
