Since the bi-lateral Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) between the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining and Materials(KIGAM) and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission(SOPAC) in 1997, the supporting activities were committed by KIGAM in the mineral and environmental science program unit. The coastal morphology mapping, which was requested by the SOPAC Technical Secretariat, was carried out by KIGAM staff on the Savai'i Island, Western Samoa. The objectives are to establish features of the coastal environment and active coastal processes including historic shoreline positions, to identify areas where infrastructures maybe threatened, to identify potential resources areas for future aggregate assessment and to compile coastal morphology data of the coastline from Sasina to Pu'apua, northeastern Savai'i Isalnd in Western Samoa. The preliminary report will be submitted to the SOPAC Technical Secretariat early in the year 2000. The SOPAC Information Technology Center(ITC) continued to produce a large amount of data in digital form and GIS-based database of onshore and offshore mineral exploration. KIGAM analyzed the database system and inventories of ITC to share the database and for technical cooperation. The onshore mineral activities are conducted at Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. KIGAM put efforts into creating a preliminary mineral productions status in a few Pacific Island Countries(PICs) during the last few years, to provide general assistance to explorers who are interested in developing the region's mineral wealth. The petroleum potential in South Pacific regions is of great interest through the brief examination of the survey data stored at the SOPAC Petroleum Data Bank, which is managed by AGSO in Canberra. KIGAM pursued the preliminary mandate to assess and promote the petroleum potential of the region. KIGAM hopes to update its database through its collaboration with AGSO for the high priority island countries such as Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. As a long-term strategy towards SOPAC regions, KIGAM will extend its working areas in geoscience capability and actively cooperate with the individual island countries, related international organizations, and the SOPAC Secretariat |
