| Abstract | On the economic front, ASEAN is an important partner for Korea because ASEAN is one of a major Korean market as well as a major supplier of raw materials like petroleum, natural gas, rubber and minerals. Therefore, under the circumstances of forging stronger political and economic ties within the regional group, it is necessary for Korea to develop closer ties with its Asian neighbors. KIGAM, which is a government-supported representative research institute in the field of geology and mineral resources realized such importance and the latent power of ASEAN countries and has stressed building a closer relationship with ASEAN through technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise. This research project is titled the 'Korea-ASEAN Technical Cooperation Programme', and serves to support the Human Resources Development to this region by providing technical training held here at KIGAM. This demonstrates our strong desire to improve cooperation between Korea and the Southeast asian region and to cultivate partnership in the area of geology and mineral resources. During its term of three years, from 1997 to 1999, a total of nineteen trainees from six countries have participated: seven trainees from three different institutes in two countries, Indonesia and Vietnam in the first year, four trainees from four different institutes in three countries, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia in the second year, and eight trainees from seven different institutes in six countries, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, China in the third year. We are sure that the cooperative relations that have been formed in recent years through this project are helpful in strengthening our ties with ASEAN countries. As a result of these successes, we have proposed several collaborative projects and expect to have more successful outcomes in the near future. Based on strong requests of many ASEAN countries to enlarge our program, we're planning to open the International Training Center for Mineral exploration and development here in KIGAM.
