초록 The reducing coal market has been enforcing the coal industry to make exceptional rationalization and restructuring efforts since the end of the eighties. To the competition from crude oil and natural gas has been added the growing pressure from rising wages and rising production cost as the working get deeper. To improve the competitive position of the remaining 11 coal mines after the rationalization of the industry, studies to improve mining system have been carried out. 1) Designing of the bord and pillar mining method to extract gently inclined seams of the Dogye Coal Mine. The Jungang pit of the Dogye Coal Mine has a gently inclined coal seam with and average dip of 15 degrees and thickness of 2m ranging from 0.3m to 4m. It is relatively competent with a compressive strength of up to 20 MPa. The seam continues only 30m at average to the geological limites. The fundamental concept of the present mining method is that the coal seam is divided into a regular pillar by driving headings in centers of 9m through it. Later the pillars are extracted by cutting rib coal up to 1-2m deep by leaving 2-3m wide centre parts as safety pillars. 2) This method shows low productivity and recovery. To introduce a new suitable mining method, and investigation on the bord and pillar method was carried out. Taking into account the seams dip, thickness and strength, and working depth the wongawilli system of the bord and pillar method seems to be suitable for the seam. A hand worked modified wongawilli system was designed and will be implemented at the site. Cost reduction through improvement of productivity and recovery are expected. 3) Mechanization of coal cutting by plough. A plough has been tested since Feb. 1997 at the Kyungdong Colliery. Through several modification it achieved following performances compared to coal pick. ① Reduced working forces from 60 workers per day to 48 workers. ② Enhanced advancing rate from 35cm per day to 46cm. ③ Improved productivity from 8.34 ton/man/shift to 12.5 ton at the face Increased daily production rate from 500 tonne to 600 tonne. 4) Achievement of the mechanization of coal mining compared to the previous year. ① Annual production decreased by 438,000 tonne. ② Coefficient of the mechanization of the coal mining increased by 2%. ③ Overall productivity of the coal mines increased by 0.08 ton/man/shift
