Abstract From 1994 to 1998 an area of 14,040 ㎢ of the quadrangle of the Kangneung Sheet (1:250,000) of the northeastern part of South Korea has been covered by a stream water and sediment geochemical survey. Totally 6,982 samples were collected and analysed for 45 trace and major elements. The result of the major and trace element distribution pattern demonstrate that bedrock geology, the presence of mine working and mineralized areas are evidently amongst the most important variables which influence the stream water chemistry in the Kangneung Sheet. But the primary geological parameters are variously modified by the atmospheric (climatic and coastal effects), anthropogenic (agriculture, urban and industrial developments) influences. The hydrochemical datasets which as produced to a rigorous baseline standard can be used for long range monitoring to assess the impacts of changes in industrial and agricultural activities and the extent of pollution burdens on stream water quality. The data also provide multielement input to epidemiological studies concerning the biosphere including plant, animal and human health. The applications to mineral exploration include the use of dissolved metal element as a pathfinder for mineralization, which could also be used in conjunction with multielement geochemical data. Regional hydrogeochemical stream water and sediment maps therefore have a wide range of economic (natural resources) and environmental applications, especially interpreted in conjunction with geological data, and in the future with hydrogeological, geomorphological, pedological, agricultural, landuse, climatic and remotely sensed datasets in a GIS environment. The hydrogeochemical sampling, followed by multielement analysis represents a practical, valuable and cost-effective addition to Regional Geochemical Mapping
